Sandwiches were both a treat and everyday food in our childhood. They were a treat because anything store-bought was a treat. They were also a treat because there was no cooking, there were no dishes to wash and sandwiches were fast. The standard ingredients for a sandwich were two pieces of light bread, Miracle Whip and something to put between the two slices of bread. Sometimes mustard was used as the spread. We called any kind of store-bought bread light bread. Were not sure where the term light originated, but it had nothing to do with the number of calories. As a child, Portia thought that light bread was called light because it weighed less than biscuits and cornbread.
