Allen’s grandfather died when Allen was 12. Fulton Midgett, Amberst’s brother, became head of the family. Fulton worked for various oil companies as a pumper on land adjoining the family’s 40-acre homestead. Eventually the family moved to the house and land provided by the oil company.
